The South African State Theatre proudly presents Girls of the Golden West, a compelling and visually captivating dance production set to take centre stage at the Sibusiso Khwinana Theatre from 7 to 12 July 2026.

Presented as part of the Vavasati Kucheza x YEF Partnership programme, Girls of the Golden West promises audiences a bold and emotionally charged theatrical experience that celebrates movement, resilience, identity, and the powerful stories embodied through dance.

Directed by acclaimed theatre-maker Momo Matsunyane and choreographed by Thami Tshabalala, the production brings together a dynamic creative team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of physical storytelling and contemporary performance. Musical direction is led by Nik Sakellarides, whose sonic landscape enriches the emotional depth and rhythm of the production.

At its heart, Girls of the Golden West explores themes of womanhood, aspiration, struggle, survival, and transformation through evocative choreography and striking visual imagery. The production invites audiences into a poetic world where movement becomes language and the body becomes a vessel of memory, resistance, and hope.

Featuring performances by Julia Burnham, Thandiwe Mqokeli, and Thamsanqa Tshabalala, the production combines physical intensity with emotional vulnerability, creating a theatrical experience that is both intimate and exhilarating.
