State Theatre welcomes new Council
The South African State Theatre proudly announces the appointment of its newly constituted Council for the 2026–2029 term, marking a bold and inspiring new chapter in the institution’s journey as a leading cultural beacon on the African continent.
Chaired by the distinguished Ms Lenore Goss-Matjie, the Council brings together an exceptional collective of leaders whose expertise spans the performing arts, academia, governance, business, law, and social development. With a career that bridges artistic excellence, entrepreneurship, and international engagement, Ms Goss-Matjie embodies the calibre of leadership guiding this new term.
Joining her is a formidable team of Council members, including Prof Janine Lewis, an acclaimed academic and award-winning researcher in theatre and performance studies; Mr Jerry Pooe, a veteran cultural practitioner with over two decades of experience and international recognition in theatre and community arts; Mr Jefferson Dirks-Korkee, a seasoned theatre-maker, educator, and arts development practitioner; Ms Ndileka Lerato Manana, a highly respected executive and governance specialist with over 30 years of leadership across multiple sectors; Dr Mosiuoa Nehemiah Ngaka, a senior academic and public sector leader with extensive expertise in governance and cultural scholarship; Ms Lynette Elaine Tlhogo, a strategic supply chain and governance professional with strong experience in public sector institutions; Adv Rebaone Nimrod Gaoraelwe, a leading legal and governance expert with extensive experience in regulatory frameworks and institutional oversight; and Ms Euodia Naanyane-Bouwer, an innovative entrepreneur and social impact leader in healthcare product development and business sustainability.
Collectively, this Council represents a powerful convergence of vision, experience, and commitment to excellence. Their diverse backgrounds reflect a shared dedication to strengthening governance, advancing transformation, and positioning the South African State Theatre as a dynamic platform for innovation, storytelling, and cultural dialogue.
Working in close partnership with the executive leadership, led by Chief Executive Officer Shane Maja, Chief Financial Officer Santa Viljoen, and Artistic Director Aubrey Sekhabi, the Council will provide strategic oversight and direction to ensure the Theatre continues to thrive as a centre of creative excellence, institutional integrity, and public engagement.
This appointment comes at a pivotal time for the South African State Theatre as it continues to expand its reach, deepen its community impact, and elevate African stories on both national and global stages. The new Council is poised to drive a forward-thinking agenda that embraces innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable growth within the creative economy.
