Soweto Theatre announces recipients
Soweto Theatre is proud to announce the successful recipients of its 2026/2027 Artistic Partnership Programme following a highly competitive call for proposals.
The Artistic Partnership Programme is designed to support and showcase exceptional South African theatre by providing artists and producers with access to professional performance spaces while promoting arts, culture, and heritage. The programme presents a diverse season of comedy, drama, contemporary theatre, and socially relevant storytelling that reflects the richness and diversity of South Africa’s creative landscape.
The seasonal intake intentionally supports multi-disciplinary applications to cultivate innovative artistic expressions, connect local creators with diverse audiences, and structurally enhance the Johannesburg performing arts network.
The selected productions for the 2026/2027 season are:
1. Soweto Comedy Fest (Produced by Kedibone Mulaudzi) – 31 July to 1 August 2026
2. Take Me to Town (Produced by Pulane Mafatshe) – 18 to 23 August 2026,
3. Born Free (Produced by Xolani Nhlapho) – 1 to 6 September 2026
4. The Newspaper (Produced by Lindokuhle Mthokozisi Mdlozini) – 29 September to 4 October 2026
5. Disorder (Produced by Lucky Gxubane) – 6 to 10 October 2026
6. Thula Mntanam (Produced by Mbasa Tsetsana) – 10 to 15 November 2026,
7. My Funeral Dress Is Worn Out – Confirmed as an early addition to the 2027 programme
8. Isixakatho / My Children, My Africa – Dates to be confirmed
9. Mountain of Ancestral Gift – Dates to be confirmed
