South African State Theatre and Monumental Acts present ADAM & AI: When Technology Becomes Too Close.

The South African State Theatre (SAST), in partnership with Monumental Acts, presents ADAM & AI, a gripping contemporary South African psychological drama running from 28 October to 1 November 2026 at the Malombo Theatre.

Written and directed by Xolani Lowrance Nhlapo, the production blends dark humour, suspense and audience interaction to confront a defining question of our time: how much control are we willing to surrender to technology?

At the centre of the story is Adam, a young man navigating work, love and loneliness while developing an increasingly intimate relationship with his artificial intelligence assistant, Eve. What begins as convenience gradually becomes unsettling as technology moves beyond being a helpful tool and begins influencing Adam’s decisions, relationships and sense of control.

Rather than imagining artificial intelligence as a distant futuristic threat, ADAM & AI brings the conversation into everyday life – our phones, private conversations, relationships, work and the information we willingly surrender.

Through humour and psychological tension, the production interrogates free will, privacy, dependency, human connection and modern loneliness. Audiences are not simply invited to watch Adam’s journey; they are encouraged to reflect on their own relationship with the devices and invisible systems increasingly shaping their lives.

Nhlapo describes the production not as a warning against technology, but as an invitation to look at ourselves. At its heart lies a deeply human contradiction: technology promises extraordinary connection, yet our need to be genuinely heard, understood and loved remains.

ADAM & AI features Tshepo Puleng Fenyane as Adam, with Azande Mazibuko as the voice of Eve.
