A festive season classic at Roodepoort Theatre presented by the Youth Russian Ballet Company (YRBC).

This holiday season, the Youth Russian Ballet Company (YRBC), in partnership with Roodepoort Theatre, brings Tchaikovsky’s timeless masterpiece The Nutcracker to the stage for four performances only, from 5 to 6 December 2026.

The production immerses audiences in a world of pure enchantment, following the thrilling battle between the Nutcracker Prince and the Mouse King through to the breathtaking Land of Sweets. Featuring the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers among its iconic musical numbers, the production showcases the talent of Johannesburg’s premier young company dancers, trained in the Vaganova method.

The Nutcracker is a beloved festive-season tradition for families, and this production offers ballet lovers, families and audiences of all ages the opportunity to experience a full-scale classical production at Roodepoort Theatre.

The production forms part of a new partnership between the Youth Russian Ballet Company and Roodepoort Theatre, bringing together the company’s dance talent and creative production with the venue’s stage and audience reach.

The season also honours a special connection to Roodepoort Theatre. Yana Auger, Director of the Russian School of Ballet and a driving force behind the Youth Russian Ballet Company, was inducted as a Star Recipient on the Stars of Roodepoort Walk of Fame, unveiled at the theatre’s 45th anniversary celebration on Heritage Day, 24 September 2025. Born in Russia and trained in the Vaganova method, Auger has taught ballet in Johannesburg since 2008 and holds a teaching qualification from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, bringing over 25 years of teaching experience to her work with young dancers. Her recognition on the Walk of Fame reflects her contribution to ballet in Johannesburg, and this production marks a continuation of that relationship with Roodepoort Theatre.
