It is the story of the miners who descended into darkness in search of a better future, only to find exploitation, illness and broken dreams. It is a story of courage, sacrifice and resilience. It is a story that belongs to South Africa.

This October, the South African State Theatre, in association with Mantimakhulu Pty Ltd, proudly presents The Gold of Rogues, a compelling South African musical that shines a spotlight on the untold realities of mining communities and the human cost behind one of the country’s greatest natural resources. The production runs from 6 October to 1 November 2026 at the Arena Theatre.

Written, directed and composed by Sello Maseko, with choreography by Sbonelo Mchunu and musical direction by Elvis TK Nkosi, The Gold of Rogues is an emotionally gripping production that combines powerful storytelling, live music and dynamic choreography to tell a story that resonates deeply with South Africa’s social and historical realities.

Inspired by the realities documented in Lucas Styles Ledwaba’s book Broke and Broken: The Shameful Legacy of Gold Mining in South Africa, the production explores the lives of miners who left their homes and families with dreams of prosperity, only to find themselves trapped in dangerous working conditions, exploitation and disease. The musical pays tribute to generations of workers whose labour helped build the nation’s economy while their own lives were often marked by hardship and neglect.

At the heart of the production is the lived experience of ordinary people whose stories have too often remained unheard. Through emotionally charged performances and stirring musical compositions, The Gold of Rogues examines the devastating impact of illegal mining, unsafe working environments and illnesses such as silicosis, exposing the stark contrast between the immense wealth extracted from the earth and the poverty endured by those who risk everything beneath it.

Yet this is not merely a story about suffering.

Through songs of redemption and triumph, the production celebrates the unbreakable spirit of communities that continue to rise despite generations of injustice. Director and playwright Sello Maseko describes the production as a tribute to the mining communities whose struggles continue to shape South Africa’s social landscape.
