Sophiatown tours SA
A legendary story returns to the stage: Sophiatown tours South Africa in 2026.
The South African State Theatre proudly presents Sophiatown, the iconic South African theatre production by the Junction Avenue Theatre Company, directed by Aubrey W. Sekhabi, embarking on a national tour from March to May 2026.
Set in the vibrant and defiant suburb of Sophiatown during the 1940s and 1950s, the production captures a time when music, journalism, politics, and rebellion converged to shape a unique urban African culture. Known as the “Chicago of South Africa,” Sophiatown was a melting pot where shebeen queens, gangsters, writers, musicians, activists, and dreamers lived side by side in an atmosphere alive with rhythm, humour, and resistance.
This revival introduces a new generation of performers under the experienced and sensitive direction of Aubrey Sekhabi, breathing fresh energy into a much-loved classic renowned for its sharp wit, infectious music, and powerful political commentary. Through song, storytelling, and richly drawn characters, Sophiatown reflects on forced removals, cultural identity, and the resilience of a community whose spirit could not be erased.
The production features a dynamic ensemble cast supported by a live band and an extensive creative team, with music at the heart of the storytelling. As entertaining as it is thought-provoking, Sophiatown invites audiences to celebrate South Africa’s cultural heritage while engaging critically with its history.
More than a revival, Sophiatown is a reminder of the power of art to preserve memory, challenge injustice, and inspire dialogue across generations. Its return to the stage is both a celebration and a call to remember the communities that shaped the nation’s cultural soul.
