South African pianist Leo Gevisser, who is now New York based, is returning to the country of his birth to give several performances. His Johannesburg Musical Society recital takes place in the Linder Auditorium in Parktown, St Andrews Road at 15:00 on Sunday 16 August.

A graduate of the famed Juilliard School of Music and a designated Young Steinway Artist, Leo is starting to make waves abroad. A Second Prize Winner at the 16th Concours de Piano d’Orleans in France, he also won the Public Prize, the Elliot Prize and – as an added bonus – a month-long Henri Dutilleux-Genevieve Joy Residency in France.

Now invited to various festivals in America and Europe, Leo Gevisser has not forgotten his roots. He regularly donates a portion of his fees to Masidlale Grassroots Project, an outreach programme run by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for under-privileged children in townships around Cape Town.

Leo is also an innovative composer and is often invited to premiere electronic compositions and installations in America, Italy and other European locations. He’ll be playing music by Grieg, Poulenc, Liszt (Deux Legendes de St Francis) and one of Mozart’s most heart-breaking and beautiful compositions, the Adagio in B minor, K 540.
