Joburg dancers excel in SAIBC Regionals
Joburg dancers excel in SA International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) Regionals held ahead of the annual event at Artscape in Cape Town in August.
The 13th South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) continues to build momentum towards its highly anticipated 2026 Semi-Finals and Finals at Artscape in Cape Town, with the recent Johannesburg Regional Competition providing an inspiring glimpse into the exceptional young talent emerging across the country. Held at Montecasino last month, the regional event brought together promising dancers who demonstrated not only technical excellence and artistry, but also the dedication and discipline that define the next generation of South African performers.
Among the standout moments was the recognition of Mikayla Van Heerden, age 14, who was awarded a fully sponsored opportunity to represent South Africa at the prestigious Dance World Cup in Dublin, Ireland, taking place from 8–18 July 2026. Her achievement reflects the increasing international standard of South African dancers and highlights the opportunities that can arise through commitment, training, and artistic excellence.
The competition also celebrated the accomplishments of Jayden Samuels, who received a R3,000 cash prize to assist with expenses for the upcoming SAIBC Finals, and Chiara Szabo, whose outstanding contemporary solo performance earned her a R1,000 cash prize. Both dancers exemplify the versatility, passion, and creative expression that continue to strengthen South Africa’s vibrant dance community.
As one of several satellite events leading up to the national competition, the Johannesburg Regional Competition showcased the important role dance plays in empowering young people through confidence, discipline, creativity, and cultural connection. These regional platforms not only recognise achievement but also create pathways for dancers to develop their skills and gain exposure on both local and international stages.
Attention now turns to the South African International Ballet Competition Semi-Finals and Finals, which will take place at the Artscape in Cape Town from 3 to 6 August 2026. The event will welcome an esteemed international adjudication panel comprising Geung Soo Kim, Sergey Usanov, Callum Hastie, Kate Coyne, Lorelei Bair, and Igor Kolb. Representing a broad spectrum of countries, companies, and artistic traditions, the panel reflects the global reach and cultural richness of ballet and dance as an art form.
As the countdown to August continues, the SAIBC remains committed to nurturing emerging talent and creating opportunities for young dancers to excel. The regional competitions serve as a powerful reminder that South Africa’s dance future is bright, with a new generation of artists preparing to take centre stage in one of the country’s premier ballet events.
