JUIG The Koortjies Musical

JUIG The Koortjies Musical

A powerful celebration of faith, identity and community.

The South African State Theatre in collaboration with Dos Production proudly presents JUIG The Koortjies Musical, a vibrant and deeply moving stage production that celebrates the enduring spirit of church choir traditions while illuminating the voices, histories and cultural resilience of marginalized communities in South Africa.

Written and Directed by the award-winning Josias Dos Moleele, writer and director.

The production will run from 10 April to 03 May 2026 at the ARENA Theatre at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria.

Rooted in the rich musical heritage of koortjies, a distinctive choral tradition that has shaped the spiritual and cultural life of many Colored and Khoisan communities, JUIG The Koortjies Musical blends powerful gospel inspired music with compelling drama and heartfelt storytelling. The production explores themes of faith, belonging, heritage and identity, demonstrating how sacred song becomes a powerful space for healing, dignity and communal pride.

Set within a contemporary South African community, the story unfolds after the passing of Pastor Eli, whose death leaves both a church and a family searching for direction. In an unexpected turn, leadership is entrusted not to the devoted eldest son Gershwin, but to the younger and once rebellious Jude. What follows is a journey marked by transformation, rivalry and reflection as Jude reshapes the church into a modern spectacle that attracts both admiration and controversy.

As the church grows in popularity, deeper questions begin to emerge. What does it truly mean to be chosen. How does one balance faith with public approval, or authenticity with performance. While Jude embraces innovation and influence, Gershwin grapples with feelings of invisibility and rejection. Around them, figures such as Elder Ruth, MamLambo and Naomi navigate their own roles in shaping the future of the community and its spiritual legacy.

Through this layered narrative, JUIG moves beyond religion to explore universal human experiences including the burden of expectation, the pain of comparison, the search for identity and the longing to belong. The musical ultimately reminds audiences that worth cannot be measured by position, popularity or performance, but must be discovered through a deeper sense of self and purpose.

Musically, the production is both a celebration and a cultural dialogue. Traditional spiritual sounds and church choir harmonies intertwine with contemporary musical textures, reflecting the dynamic tension between heritage and modernity, tradition and transformation. The result is a theatrical experience that is both emotionally stirring and musically uplifting.

With its powerful themes, dynamic performances and resonant musical score, JUIG The Koortjies Musical invites audiences of all ages to reflect on faith, family, identity and the enduring strength of community.
