Gifted young Spanish pianist plays for JMS

Leo de Maria

The Johannesburg Musical Society presents gifted pianist, Leo de Maria, in the Linder Auditorium on Sunday 12 April at 15:00.

Leo de Maria, the gifted young Spanish pianist who won the prestigious UNISA International Piano Competition in 2024, will be playing a programme drenched in romantic drama and poetry for his Johannesburg recital in the Linder Auditorium, St Andrews Road, Parktown.

Leo de Maria already has a substantial career in Europe and the Americas, and besides winning the UNISA competition he holds many other international awards. He is also the winner of the Cuidad de Ferrol International Competition of Spain, the MozARTe Competition in Germany and the Grand Prix de Lyon.

With a career that now takes him across the globe (he has performed in cities as far-flung as Moscow, Cleveland, Mexico City, Chongqing, Shanghai and Xianen), he will present a programme of essentially romantic music to his Johannesburg audience. He’ll be playing one of Schumann’s most personal works, the little-heard Humoreske, Love and Death (Amor y la Muerta) by Spanish composer Enrique Granados, and Franz Liszt’s dramatic ‘Dante’ sonata. The programme will end with Ravel’s La Valse.

The concert starts at 15:00 on Sunday 12 April. Tickets may be pre-booked at Quicket or bought at the Linder box office from 14:00 onwards.
