A festival of fun underway at ISAM

Iziko Museums of South Africa

Winter school holiday is officially in full swing at Iziko Museums of South Africa, welcoming families, learners, and curious explorers of all ages.

Following a highly successful kick-off weekend of cultural connection, an exciting line-up of live exhibitions, interactive workshops, and multi-site experiences is now running across all Iziko locations throughout July, ensuring an unforgettable season of creativity, culture, and exploration.

Parents and guardians looking to keep young minds active and inspired can choose from a diverse range of interactive winter programmes happening right now and over the coming weeks. Kicking off this week and running until 3 July 2026, the action-packed Flip, Fly and Flourish Circus Workshop invites children aged 7 to 12 to explore the exciting world of circus arts in partnership with the world-renowned Zip Zap Circus. Taking place daily from 11:00 to 13:00 at the Iziko South African Museum for R165 per child, this workshop builds confidence, coordination, and teamwork through tumbling, juggling, and interactive games. Spaces are limited, and bookings can be secured online at https://bit.ly/43AQKbP.

Following this, Iziko will host a specialised Careers Workshop from 7 to 9 July to guide and inspire older learners, which can be booked at https://bit.ly/Iziko_Careers2026. This will be followed by a three-day immersive Winter School Holiday Programme from 13 to 16 July that offers deep dives into art, science, history, and heritage, bookable via e-mail at bookings@iziko.org.za.

To accommodate essential infrastructure maintenance and repairs, some sections of the Iziko South African Museum are temporarily closed. However, to ensure visitors still enjoy a robust, world-class cultural experience, Iziko is running a special More Museums, More Experiences bonus initiative for the duration of the holidays. Every visitor purchasing a ticket to the Iziko South African Museum will receive a complimentary, same-day entry ticket to explore any of Iziko’s prominent satellite sites, including the Iziko South African National Gallery, the Iziko Slave Lodge, the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, or the Iziko Old Town House. This complimentary ticket is redeemable in person at the respective front desks and is subject to standard operational hours, though it excludes the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome.

While the maintenance is underway, the vast majority of the Iziko South African Museum remains fully open and accessible, featuring highly popular exhibition halls such as the Power of Rock Art, Home Coming, Sea and Us, Gaiasphere, The Art of Science, Tata Madiba, Humanity, and Bees. Visitors can also round out their cultural journey by enjoying Iziko’s vibrant culinary spaces, as the ISAM Café remains open and operating as normal for a warm beverage, while the Iziko Old Town House Café at Greenmarket Square offers a perfect, relaxing slice of heaven during an inner-city museum tour.

Throughout the rest of the winter holidays, visitors can expect hands-on interactive exhibitions, family-friendly guided tours, and rich educational experiences designed to showcase South Africa’s unique art, history, and scientific achievements. Whether you are uncovering ancient fossils, admiring world-class art, or diving into powerful historical narratives, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Bring the whole family and make the rest of this winter holiday a memorable journey of discovery. Full programme details, specific dates, and live booking links for all upcoming workshops are available on the official Iziko Museums website at www.iziko.org.za.
