The Newspaper
A bold theatrical interrogation of truth, power and the stories we choose to believe.
The South African State Theatre, in association with Okhule Artistic Collective, proudly presents The Newspaper, a compelling and visually striking stage production written, directed and choreographed by Lindokuhle Mdlozini Hadebe.
Presented as part of the Youth Expressions Festival, The Newspaper runs at the Sibusiso Khwinana Theatre from 20 February to 01 March 2026, inviting audiences into a gripping exploration of media, manipulation, truth and the power structures that shape public consciousness.
Through a fusion of physical theatre and movement, The Newspaper interrogates how narratives are constructed, circulated and consumed. Set within a world where headlines dominate reality, the production questions who controls the story, whose voices are amplified, and whose truths are silenced. It challenges audiences to reflect on the role of media in shaping political, social and personal identities.
With its striking visual language and urgent thematic focus, The Newspaper speaks directly to contemporary South African realities while resonating globally in an age of misinformation and performative truth. The production places young voices at the centre of national discourse, using theatre as a site of resistance, inquiry and critical engagement.
As part of the Youth Expressions Festival, The Newspaper reaffirms the South African State Theatre’s commitment to nurturing fearless young creatives and presenting work that confronts social realities with honesty, imagination and artistic rigour.
The Newspaper is recommended for audiences aged 13 years and older and runs for a limited season.
