Letters From Tomorrow
A haunting new South African play asks what we owe the future.
The South African State Theatre, in association with Fiction Station Productions, proudly presents Letters From Tomorrow, a powerful and thought-provoking new stage production written by Mbasa Tsetsana and co-directed by Sinenhlanhla Mgeyi and Tsetsana.
Presented as part of the State Theatre’s Incubator Programme, Letters From Tomorrow runs at the Sibusiso Khwinana Theatre from 30 April to 10 May 2026, offering audiences an intimate and emotionally layered theatrical experience.
At the centre of the production is a solitary figure writing letters not only to people, but to time itself. Through these letters, the play explores memory, responsibility, regret, and the moral complexities that shape human life. It confronts the uncomfortable truth that our choices echo far beyond the present moment. As the production reflects, “Sometimes, life isn’t simply black and white.”
With its restrained visual language and deeply reflective storytelling, Letters From Tomorrow resonates strongly within the South African context, speaking to questions of legacy, accountability, and the stories we leave behind. The production invites audiences to pause, listen, and reflect on both personal and collective futures.
The work continues the South African State Theatre’s commitment to developing original South African voices and presenting bold, socially relevant theatre that stimulates conversation and critical thought. Through the Incubator Programme, artists are supported to experiment and present work that is both innovative and rooted in lived experience.
Letters From Tomorrow is recommended for audiences aged 15 years and older and runs for a limited season.
