Legends Live On celebrates David Mabaso and the legacy of The Big Dudes in a powerful tribute honouring the soundtracks that shaped a generation.

Roodepoort Theatre, in partnership with Music Mind Productions, proudly presents Legends Live On, a landmark tribute concert honouring South African musical heritage. Taking place on 26 March 2026 at 19:00, the production builds on the Theatre’s acclaimed 45th Anniversary Celebration, which honoured national icons for their artistry and contribution to the country’s cultural identity.

This year’s tribute centres on David Mabaso, the last surviving member of the iconic band The Big Dudes. Renowned for their genre‑defining collaborations with Brenda Fassie, The Big Dudes helped shape the sound of South African pop music in the late 70s and 80s. Their music crossed boundaries and united audiences at a time when cultural expression held profound power. Mabaso, affectionately known as Mr Weekend Special for his signature bassline on the hit song, remains a living testament to this golden era of South African music.

Produced by Jacky Carpede, with Lebohang Pangwa and Michael Phillips serving as Musical Directors, Legends Live On has been transformed into an immersive two‑set production. The first half offers an intimate exploration of Mabaso’s personal and musical journey, while the second half reimagines The Big Dudes’ most celebrated works, creating a bridge between legacy and contemporary artistry.

Roodepoort Theatre remains committed not only to serving as a performance venue but also to being a custodian of South Africa’s cultural memory. Through productions like Legends Live On, the Theatre seeks to ensure that the stories of musical pioneers are preserved, documented, and shared with new generations of audiences.
