Lebone – (exhibition)

A visual meditation on motherhood, memory and African spirituality.

The South African State Theatre, in partnership with Black Archive Studio (Pty) Ltd, proudly presents Lebone, a multidisciplinary visual art exhibition by visual artist Lerato Lodi.

Presented as part of the State Theatre’s Incubator Programme for the Visual Arts, Lebone will be exhibited from 01 to 31 March 2026 at the Opera Marble Foyer of the South African State Theatre. The exhibition offers audiences an intimate and reflective encounter with themes of motherhood, spirituality, ancestry and the southern African black aesthetic.

Lebone is an ongoing body of work in which Lodi reflects on her lived experiences of motherhood while tracing a deeply personal lineage connected to her maternal grandmother, Thalita Lodi. Through visual arts research, writing and archival practices, the exhibition functions as both a personal archive and a broader cultural meditation on care, memory and inheritance.

Building on her previous solo exhibitions Morapedi and Leruo, Lodi’s artistic practice is rooted in African spirituality and religious expression. She works with traditional and non-traditional art-making techniques, including acrylic paint on canvas, beads and sacred cloth, to interrogate spirituality as it manifests in everyday life. Her work further examines sites of worship such as shrines and temples, as well as the materials and offerings that shape these sacred spaces.

With its layered textures, symbolic materials and contemplative tone, Lebone invites audiences of all ages to reflect on the intersections between faith, femininity, ancestry and contemporary African identity. The exhibition affirms the South African State Theatre’s role as a multidisciplinary cultural institution committed to supporting visual artists alongside theatre-makers, musicians and dancers.
