Evita Bezuidenhout for one night only

Evita Bezuidenhout

Evita Bezuidenhout, now 91, returns to The Market Theatre on 21 October at 19:00, revisiting her remarkable journey from 1981 to 1994.

In a thrilling return to where it all began, iconic South African satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys brings his equally legendary alter ego, Evita Bezuidenhout, back to The Market Theatre for Evita @ 91.  10 years older than her imposter. She has been in the public domain since April 1981 when she caught the public’s ear and eye at the Market Theatre in ‘Adapt or Dye’. She became the South African Ambassador in the Independent Homeland Republic of Bapetikosweti. During 1981 – 1994 she has experienced the dramas of the National Party’s chalk becoming the ANC’s cheese.

Today, as a member of the ANC, she is still cooking for reconciliation in the kitchen of Luthuli House. Tannie Evita has been invited to attend the 50th anniversary year of the Market Theatre. Although she keeps her opinions carefully to herself some things just cannot be restrained.

Across the decades, Evita became not just a persona but a vehicle for social change, satire and expression at some of our most difficult periods as a country.

Now, 35 years after Evita’s conception, she returns to The Market Theatre during its 50th anniversary year.

Audiences can expect a bare-knuckle exploration of contemporary South Africa, delivered with the wit, irreverence, entertainment and emotional depth that have made Evita Bezuidenhout one of the country’s most enduring theatrical and satirical characters. Evita @ 91 is both a celebration of an extraordinary legacy and a reminder that, despite how far we have come, there is still much to question, confront and laugh about.
