Sarafina!

Commemorating 50 years since June 16, 1976 — A defining moment in Soweto’s history, Sarafina! returns to Soweto Theatre.

Soweto Theatre is excited to announce the return of SARAFINA! This revival comes at a deeply significant moment in South Africa’s cultural calendar, as the nation marks the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising of 16 June 1976 — a defining moment in Soweto’s history and a turning point in the struggle for freedom and dignity. The return of SARAFINA! to Soweto Theatre is presented not only as a theatrical season, but as a living act of remembrance, education, and intergenerational dialogue.

Rooted in the spirit of edutainment, this commemorative season uses theatre as a powerful educational platform, bringing history to life for young audiences in a way that is emotional, accessible and transformative. In response to strong interest from schools, additional daytime performances have been scheduled specifically for learner audiences, ensuring that school groups can engage directly with the story, the music and the lived history of 1976 within a safe, guided, and reflective environment. These performances are designed to support curriculum learning while deepening cultural understanding and historical awareness.

Learners, educators, youth organizations, senior citizens and veterans of the struggle are all invited to experience this landmark production. The season is designed as a shared national moment, one that bridges generations, allowing those who lived through 1976 to reflect alongside young people who are encountering this history through performance for the first time. It is both remembrance and renewal, honoring the past while investing in the consciousness of the future.

In a powerful continuation of its historic legacy, PUTCO has come on board to transport learners from surrounding schools to Soweto Theatre. This gesture carries deep symbolic weight: just as PUTCO played a significant role during the events of 1976, moving communities during a time of resistance and upheaval, its involvement today reflects continuity, access and the importance of movement both physical and historical in connecting people to their heritage. This partnership ensures that no learner is excluded from experiencing this important cultural moment due to logistical barriers.

Omoda & Jaecoo Lenasia have also joined as partners in the production, supporting the movement of the cast and contributing to the spirit of community-driven commemoration. Their involvement underscores a shared commitment to cultural preservation and local empowerment, reinforcing the idea that SARAFINA! is not only a performance but a collective act of remembrance carried by the community itself.

Further strengthening the production’s cultural significance, the Joburg Tourism Company has come on board, aligning the season with its positioning of Johannesburg as a vibrant cultural capital. Through this partnership, SARAFINA! is framed as a key heritage experience within the city’s tourism and cultural landscape reinforcing the message of “bringing Johannesburg to life” through stories that are rooted in its history, its people, and its struggle for freedom.

Directed by Mpho Molepo, this reimagined production honors Mbongeni Ngema’s original vision while speaking directly to contemporary South African audiences. Molepo brings a bold yet respectful directorial approach, ensuring that the emotional urgency, political consciousness, and artistic power of the original work remain intact while being made relevant for today’s generation.

Artistic Director James Ngqobo reflects on the significance of staging the production in this commemorative year: “SARAFINA! is more than a musical it is a memory, a testimony, and a tribute. Bringing it home to Soweto at this moment in our history is an act of honouring the young people of 1976, whose courage changed the trajectory of our country. This production is for them, for the youth of today, and for generations to come. It is through education and edutainment that we keep their legacy alive and ensure that their voices are never forgotten.”

At its heart, SARAFINA! tells the story of a young generation finding its voice under oppression. Set at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto, the musical follows Sarafina and her classmates as they navigate the collision between youthful dreams and the harsh realities of apartheid education. Through song, dance, and storytelling, the production captures both the joy and the pain of resistance, echoing the resilience of the youth who stood up in 1976.

To experience SARAFINA! in Soweto itself the place where history was made and where the story was born is to step into memory, reflection, and celebration all at once. This season invites audiences not only to watch history, but to feel it, learn from it, and carry it forward.
