The Vacant Oracle
WHEN THE GODS FALL SILENT, WHO CLAIMS THE POWER?
The Vacant Oracle brings royal ambition, forbidden love and ancestral reckoning to the stage.
An Oracle has died. A sacred burial cannot proceed. And the gods refuse to name a successor. Into this dangerous silence steps The Vacant Oracle, an epic African stage tragedy presented by the South African State Theatre in association with Kaygee Productions at the Sibusiso Khwinana Theatre.
Written, directed and choreographed by Kagiso Brilliant Mothoa, the production transports audiences to the neighbouring kingdoms of Letlamoreng and Mothusong, where flawed kings preside over a world in which political authority and spiritual responsibility are deeply entangled.
In Letlamoreng, the king once manipulated divine systems to secure his power. Now, the death of the old Oracle exposes a crisis that royal command alone cannot resolve: his body cannot be buried until a successor is chosen, yet no answer comes from the gods.
As uncertainty grips the kingdoms, forbidden love, concealed bloodlines and stolen power draw gods, ancestors and humans into a struggle over the future. What unfolds is a contest over who has the right to rule, whose truth will be heard and whether destiny can be bent to serve ambition.
The Vacant Oracle places a compelling question before its audience: what happens when those who claim sacred authority can no longer secure its blessing? Through its imagined kingdoms, the production opens a conversation about leadership, accountability and the consequences of power obtained through deception.
Mothoa’s combined role as writer, director and choreographer brings storytelling and movement into the same creative vision. The production invites audiences into a world where the past remains an active force, hidden histories threaten the present, and change refuses to wait for permission.
For lovers of African storytelling and the intrigue of royal tragedy, The Vacant Oracle offers a tale of divided loyalties, dangerous secrets and a future struggling to emerge.
The throne may have a ruler. The Oracle’s place stands empty. Who will answer when destiny calls?
