Combat Mothers
South African State Theatre brings Combat Mothers to the stage: A gripping story of love, survival and the unbreakable strength of women.
The South African State Theatre, in association with Adon Boneh Designs (Pty) Ltd, proudly presents Combat Mothers, a powerful new theatrical production that shines a spotlight on the extraordinary resilience, sacrifice and unwavering love of mothers forced to navigate the brutal realities of conflict. Running from 5 to 9 August 2026 at the Sibusiso Khwinana Theatre, this compelling production promises to be one of the most emotionally moving theatre experiences of the season.
Co-written and directed by Asibonge Ntuli and Kwandokuhle Goba, Combat Mothers tells a deeply human story of women whose courage is tested beyond imagination. In a world torn apart by violence, these mothers refuse to surrender hope, fighting every day to protect their children, preserve their dignity and hold onto their humanity. Their stories are a poignant reminder that even in the darkest moments, love remains the greatest act of resistance.
Through gripping performances, evocative imagery and emotionally charged storytelling, Combat Mothers invites audiences to reflect on the cost of war, the enduring power of motherhood and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a production that speaks not only to the experiences of women in conflict but also to universal themes of family, sacrifice, hope and survival.
Featuring a talented cast including Nande Galadla, Awethu Mtolo, Malaika Mandongane, Tema Shongwe and Lerato Vivica, with stage management by Bonolo Mnguni and production design by Adon Boneh Designs, the production promises an unforgettable theatrical journey that will move, inspire and stay with audiences long after the final curtain falls.
The South African State Theatre continues its commitment to presenting bold, thought-provoking productions that reflect the complexities of the human experience while Page 2 of 3 celebrating the transformative power of live performance. Combat Mothers is more than a play, it is a tribute to the countless women whose strength continues to shape families, communities and nations.
Whether you are a theatre enthusiast, student, family or first-time theatre-goer, Combat Mothers is a production not to be missed.
