A gripping new drama comes to the Market Theatre. Letters from Tomorrow confronts the unfinished conversations of South Africa’s past.

“What do we owe the generation that comes after us?”

This urgent question lies at the heart of LETTERS FROM TOMORROW, a raw and intimate new South African stage production presented as part of the 2026 Cradle of Creativity Festival at the Market Theatre’s Ramolao Makhene Theatre.

Written by Mbasa Tsetsana and directed by award-winning director Bhekindlela Allen Cebekhulu, the production explores freedom, sacrifice, fatherhood and the deeply personal cost of South Africa’s liberation struggle.

Set against the political violence of apartheid and framed through the testimony of a former security policeman before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, LETTERS FROM TOMORROW follows three men bound by a shared past shaped by silence, survival and secrets. As buried truths begin to surface, they are forced to confront not only what was done, but what was left unsaid.

At the centre of the story is Gqozo, a committed freedom fighter whose devotion to the struggle comes into painful conflict with his relationship with his son, Mkhonto.

Mkhonto is coming of age in the shadow of a father whose life has been consumed by politics, sacrifice and the demands of a country in crisis. He longs to understand his father—but he also wants to escape the expectations placed upon him.

Between father and son lies an entire generation, and everything that generation was asked to sacrifice.

Then there are the letters.

Hidden inside a Bible, letters from Nelson Mandela become an unexpected bridge between the political struggle and the deeply personal struggle of a father trying to find his way back to his son. But history refuses to offer easy answers, and the fragile line between victim and perpetrator becomes increasingly difficult to define.

Raw, unflinching and deeply human, LETTERS FROM TOMORROW explores identity and accountability, memory and testimony, masculinity and shame, and the enduring question of whether reconciliation is truly possible.

The production features a powerful cast: Sive Matiwane as Gqozo, Ter Hollmann as Van Schroer and Lunga Khuhlane as Mkhonto.

The play arrives at a particularly significant moment. In 2026, South Africa commemorates 50 years since the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising—a defining moment when young people changed the political trajectory of the country.

For today’s young adults, that history can sometimes feel distant. Yet its consequences remain present in our homes, our identities, our relationships and the silences passed from one generation to the next. LETTERS FROM TOMORROW invites audiences aged 16 and older to encounter history not as a collection of dates and political events, but through the people who carried it: their courage, contradictions, wounds, choices and unfinished conversations.

Who gets to define a hero?

What does liberation mean to the child of a freedom fighter?

Can we give everything to a country and still fail the people we love?

And what will today’s generation leave behind for those who come next?

This proudly local production seeks to do more than tell a story. It creates a space for reflection, dialogue and engagement at a time when revisiting South Africa’s past remains both necessary and urgent.

Letters from Tomorrow was initially developed through the UJ Playwriting Lab and premiered at the State Theatre in May 2026 as part of their Incubator Programme.

The Cradle of Creativity Festival is supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the Department of Basic Education, the National Arts Council through the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme, the Market Theatre Foundation, the Royal Netherlands Embassy, the Performing Arts Fund NL, the Goethe-Institut, the Northern Cape Theatre, the Northern Cape Arts and Culture Council, the Social Employment Fund and the Buz Hive.
