ISILILO: A profound exploration of South African tragedy and triumph at the South African State Theatre.
ISILILO, an extraordinary blend of comedy, absurdism, physical theatre, and dramatic prose, is set to captivate audiences with its powerful narrative and dynamic performances. This contemporary South African theatre production, developed by Siyambonga Mdubeki and his talented troupe, delves deep into the collective traumas of the Life Esidimeni tragedy, offering a poignant reflection on the nation’s struggles and resilience.
“Nothing lasts long enough to have been. These fragments of everything descend upon us haphazardly. Only rarely do we see the immanence of wholes. And that is the beginning of art.” – Dambudzo Marechera, House of Hunger ISILILO stands as a testament to the versatility of South African theatre practitioners, who skilfully weave narrative and performative responsibilities into a deeply South African story in both form and content. The production recounts the harrowing experiences of families affected by the Life Esidimeni tragedy, where the rainbow nation faltered, inflicting unimaginable suffering and pain on its citizens.
Through delicate storytelling, beautiful prose, and dynamic scenes and prop-work, ISILILO restores humanity to the victims of this tragedy. The cast, including Zanele Mthombeni, Tsegofatso Masekwameng, and Siyambonga Mdubeki, under the direction of Ncumisa Ndimeni and Baleni Ernest, brings this powerful story to life.
Comments and Testimonials:
• Mrs. Jabulile Hlatshwayo: “I am watching this play for the second time now.
This will be a mouthpiece for Life Esidimeni families, as our government looks down on us. They think that since they have compensated us, everything is alright. We still need justice for our own lost families. I think this play will give us justice.”
• Audience Member: “What a beautiful story, beyond the activism, beyond the story. What an honor and a privilege to be part of that room and to witness all that. You know when you think of people from Life Esidimeni, you think of them from a state of, when they are already born, that they suffered from a mental health issue, but to go through the timeline of this man, for me it just hits home. It is so relatable, I could empathize.”
Director’s Comment: “ISILILO is not just a play; it is a powerful narrative that brings to light the profound impact of the Life Esidimeni tragedy on our nation. Through this production, we aim to honour the victims and their families, and to spark conversations that lead to healing and justice. Our talented cast and crew have poured their hearts into this performance, and we believe it will resonate deeply with audiences.” – Ncumisa Ndimeni
