The Fatherland

The Fatherland.

The curtain rises on the life and political career of liberation hero, Dr. Tlou Theophilus Cholo in the epic stage production The Fatherland, a powerful musical journey that honours one of South Africa’s most enduring and decorated sons of the struggle. Running from 10 October to 9 November 2025 at the Opera Theatre, this stirring production pays tribute to Dr. Cholo’s lifelong commitment to freedom, justice, and human dignity.

Portrayed by the gifted Terrence Ngwila, The Fatherland traces his remarkable political odyssey and the defining moments that helped shape South Africa’s path to liberation.

At the helm is Aubrey Sekhabi, one of South Africa’s most celebrated theatre directors, whose visionary touch transforms The Fatherland into a living monument of resilience, sacrifice, and triumph. The eclectic cast brings together a dynamic ensemble of some of South Africa’s most compelling stage talents. Siyakha Tshayela shines as Alina, while Minenhle Skhosana embodies the strength and grace of MmaCholo. Ntsika Ngxanga steps into the role of Sisulu, joined by Tshallo Chokoe as Sekwele, and Thapelo Lefifi as the iconic Tambo. Siyabonga Gazu delivers a stirring performance as Joe Modise, with Dingalethu Maphithela taking on the powerful role of Chris Hani. Together, this ensemble breathes life into The Fatherland, transforming history into a visceral, soul-stirring theatrical experience.

Born in 1926 in Kgakana Village, Limpopo, Dr. Cholo’s journey began as a trade union activist and ANC Youth League member, later volunteering as a founding cadre of uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK). His commitment to liberation saw him train militarily in the USSR, China, and Tanzania, followed by daring attempts to return home – one by sea and another by air – both ending in arrest. Under the 1967 Terrorism Act, he was imprisoned for 16 years on Robben Island, where he shared cells with icons such as Nelson Mandela. Upon his release in 1988, he co-founded the Association of Ex-Political Prisoners and went on to lead the ANC Soshanguve branch, remaining a steadfast voice for justice and unity. The Presidency bestowed upon Dr Cholo, The Order of Luthuli in Silver, honouring his unwavering dedication to the liberation struggle and his lifelong service to South Africa.

The Fatherland is a musical journey through time – weaving heartfelt storytelling with stirring original compositions that echo the heartbeat of a nation fighting for its soul. From the rural landscapes of Limpopo to the harsh confinements of Robben Island, audiences will relive Dr. Cholo’s remarkable life of exile, sacrifice, and unbroken hope.
