Revival of timeless SA classic play

In a powerful tribute to the women who fought against apartheid, the iconic play “You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock / Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokotho” debuts at the Lesedi Theatre from 23 February – 09 March 2025.
Originally crafted in 1986 by the renowned Phyllis Klotz, with the collaboration of talented performers Thobeka Maqhutyana, Nomvula Qosha, and Poppy Tsira, this groundbreaking play stands as a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of women living in the townships of Cape Town during the height of apartheid.
The narrative centers on three primary characters: Sdudla, Mambhele, and Mampompo, who navigate a landscape marked by profound racial, social, and economic disparities. In this context, the absence of male figures compels women to undertake significant risks to maintain familial cohesion. Helmed by the acclaimed director Rorisang Motuba, the production features Ziaphora Dakile as Sdudla, Keitumetse “Kitty” Moepang as Mampompo, and Barileng Malebye in the role of Mambhele.
This classic play, inspired by the iconic 1956 slogan from the South African women’s march against apartheid laws, remains just as significant today as it was five decades ago. Its themes of gender activism and the ongoing struggle for gender equality resonate deeply with audiences, making it a vital piece for high school curriculums and aspiring theatre students.
The 2021 tour of the play has brought this significant historical document to the attention of a new generation, making its revival on stage a milestone for South African theatre. With the production now accessible to all schools as a set work, students have a unique chance to connect with this impactful and thought-provoking piece.
“We are ecstatic to bring this timeless classic back to the stage,” said James Ngcobo, the Artistic Director of Joburg City Theatres. “The themes and messages in ‘You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock’ remain as pertinent today as they were at the time of its creation. We hope this production will spark inspiration in a new generation of theatre enthusiasts and activists to continue advocating for gender equality and social justice.”
