A classic returns to the national stage: My Children! My Africa! at the South African State Theatre.

The South African State Theatre, by arrangement with Dalro Pty Ltd, proudly presents My Children! My Africa! by Athol Fugard, directed by Aubrey W. Sekhabi, from 02 to 13 March 2026 at the South African State Theatre.

Set in the final years of apartheid, My Children! My Africa! is a compelling three-character play that brings together Mr M, a dedicated black schoolteacher, Thami, his gifted student, and Isabel, a white learner from a neighbouring school. What begins as an academic debate and a tentative friendship soon deepens into a powerful exploration of conscience, education, resistance, and the moral cost of political choice.

As the country stands at a crossroads, the play stages a profound clash between idealism and activism, words and action, tradition and change. Fugard’s writing captures the fragility of dialogue in times of social upheaval, while Sekhabi’s direction reawakens the urgency of the text for contemporary South Africa, where questions of youth, protest, education, and ethical leadership remain sharply relevant.

This South African State Theatre production features a dynamic cast led by Penny Wolhuter, Mandla Gaduka, and Thandolwethu Zondi, supported by a strong creative team including lighting designer Pretty Masemola, assistant director Bongani Masango, and stage management by Kagiso Modise and Ofentse Kgrori.

More than a revival, My Children! My Africa! is an invitation to reflect on the power of learning, the responsibility of the young, and the enduring question of how a nation educates its future while confronting its past. The production speaks directly to learners, educators, families, and all who believe in theatre as a vital space for dialogue, memory, and national reflection.
