About Joburg Ballet
Joburg Ballet NPC is one of South Africa’s leading performing arts institutions and a registered non-profit company (Registration number: 2001/016254/08|NPO: 016-403), dedicated to excellence in classical ballet and contemporary dance. Based at the Joburg Theatre Complex, the company stages world-class productions, commissions new works and drives inclusive community engagement, training and transformation initiatives across South Africa and beyond.
As Joburg Ballet continues to build its international presence and strengthen its sustainability, the Board seeks to expand its membership to include additional expertise and a global perspective.
Call for applications
The Board of Joburg Ballet invites applications and nominations for the appointment of at least three (3) additional non-executive directors to complement the existing skills and experience of the Board.
We are particularly seeking individuals who can contribute to Joburg Ballet’s next phase of growth through international exposure, strategic insight and fund-raising capability.
Desired director profiles
We welcome applications from candidates who demonstrate the following:
1. International and global networks
• Experience working across international arts, philanthropic or investment ecosystems.
• Ability to open doors to global partnerships, touring opportunities and artistic collaborations.
• Appreciation of the role of cultural diplomacy and the global creative economy.
2. Fund-raising and development expertise
• Proven record in mobilising philanthropic, corporate or institutional support for non-profit or cultural initiatives.
• Strategic understanding of donor engagement, sponsorships, brand partnerships or endowment-building.
• Willingness to leverage personal and professional networks in support of Joburg Ballet’s fundraising objectives.
3. Strategic and financial acumen
• Demonstrated experience in business strategy, governance, financial oversight or organisational development.
• Ability to contribute to the company’s long-term financial sustainability and strategic positioning.
• Understanding of NPO governance in a South African and/or international context.
4. Additional attributes
• Commitment to the arts, transformation and inclusive access to cultural expression.
• Strong collaborative and values-based leadership style.
• Prior board or senior governance experience preferred.
Commitment and tenure
Directors are appointed by the Board in accordance with Joburg Ballet’s Memorandum of Incorporation.
Board members serve on a voluntary basis, with no remuneration and are expected to:
• Attend quarterly Board meetings and annual strategy sessions.
• Serve on at least one Board Committee (e.g. Artistic Innovation; Fundraising and Brand Association; Audit and Risk; Remuneration, Governance and Nominations; Social, Ethics and Transformation).
• Actively champion Joburg Ballet’s mission and values in their networks.
