The play tells the touching story of young Zandile, who lives a blissful life with her cherished grandmother in Durban. However, when her mother relocates her to rural Transkei, Zandile’s world is turned upside down. She must navigate traditional expectations that prioritize hard labour and early marriage over education. As Zandile struggles against societal norms, she also comes to terms with the profound loss of her grandmother’s nurturing presence. As Zandile navigates her path, she uncovers a deep well of strength and resilience, a transformation that is beautifully brought to life by Director Momo Matsunyane.
Momo’s involvement in the production is particularly meaningful, as she not only directs but also has a personal connection to the story. Having previously played the role of Zandile, Momo brings a unique, deeply empathetic perspective to the production. Her directorial expertise, passion for storytelling, cultural insight, and experience working with diverse talent make her the ideal candidate to reimagine this timeless story for a new generation. Momo’s multifaceted involvement enriches the production, ensuring a profound and authentic portrayal of Zandile’s journey.
The role of Zandile is skilfully portrayed by Zevangeli Mampofu, a gifted actress who honed her craft at the Market Theatre Laboratory. Meanwhile, Siseko Velelo showcases her impressive range, effortlessly embodying four diverse characters: Gogo, Lulama, Lindama, and the Old Woman.
