Don’t Let The Sun Set On You Here

Thamsanqa Majela takes his award-winning show ‘Don’t Let The Sun Set On You Here’ to Soweto Theatre.
South African born Choreographer, Creative Director, Performing Artist, and Standard Bank Young Artist Award Winner for 2022 in Dance, Thamsanqa Majela is set to grace the Soweto Theatre stage with the much-anticipated dance piece “Don’t let the sun set on you here…” on December 03, 2023.
Coproduced by the National Arts Festival “Don’t let the sun set on you here…” is putting contemporary dance language on the African or World stage. It intends to explore the current geopolitical, racial and clamatorial issues that keep the world under pressure. It is a surrealistic, afro-futuristic and an aesthetic approach that includes scientific and historic elements in its effort to open up the intersection of the African diaspora in terms of philosophy, culture, technology, and fashion.
Majela, invites audiences to enter the world of this masterpiece, a dance offering derived from a boldly lettered sign that stood shameless in front of the white-columned country house in Cumming, Forsyth Country, Ga. “Nigger, don’t let the sun set on you in Forsyth Country.”
According to Majela, this particular work has no definitive narrative, the one who views the work is able to formulate their own narrative, however, one thing that will unite everyone is the feelings through the experience of moving images.
“This work is packed with recognisable/relatable subliminal messages and symbolisms from an African perspective. The question ‘How do we move in the future’ was a vehicle for me: Our world is ever changing so rapidly, surely even machines will be exhausted. To be staging this piece at Soweto Theatre is a huge privilege. I always aim to share my work with different communities in South Africa and I believe Soweto is special given its historical background, it is also a place which reflects on all of these themes, it is a community with rapid change”, said Thamsanqa Majela.
Thamsanqa Majela represents a generation of young South African artists who have given their all to a career in the arts who continue to stand out from the crowd which makes this a seamless and exciting partnership.
“Soweto Theatre is privileged to host this remarkable work already recognised for its innovation, its bravery, its beauty, and its truth. Don’t let the sun set on you here…is an extension of what we believe in and allows our mission as an investor in the arts and an enabler of artist to be realised,” says Soweto Theatre General Manager -Vincent Motau
For this coming performance appearing on stage with Thamsanqa will be Sibonelo Mchunu, Smangaliso Ngwenya and Tawanda Mandara accompanied by percussionist Innocent Mohlakane.
The creation of “Don’t let the sun set on you here’ was made possible with support from the National Arts Council, PACOFS and the French Institute of South Africa.
