CPO summer season tickets on sale
Booking has opened for the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s Summer Symphonies at the City Hall.
Following a season of exciting and unusual works, the Summer season offers a blockbuster series of five concerts, including two Requiems, running from October 19 to November 14.
In the first concert, on Saturday, October 19, the Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town will present the Verdi Requiem under the direction of Daniel Boico with soloists Paulina Malefane (soprano), Violina Anguelov-Hobbs (mezzo soprano), Lukhanyo Moyake (tenor) and Thato Machona (baritone).
Making his first appearance in our symphony season is American conductor Jonathan McPhee, who enthralled audiences when he conducted Don Quixote with the CPO and Cape Town City Ballet.
Ben Schoeman is the soloist in Maestro Jonathan McPhee’s first concert on October 24 which also includes a celebration of the 80th birthday of South African composer John Simon with the world premiere of Fugal Fantasy for strings, harp and tam tam as well as Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and Bizet’s Symphony No. 1 in C. On October 31 Korean violinist Hye-Yoon Park, who entranced the Cape Town Concert Series audience a couple of years ago, will perform the Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor. The other works on the programme are two CPO premieres – Nielsen’s Helios Overture and Elgar’s Falstaff. The Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Charlene Verster, will open this concert with a piece called For the Next Thousand by Otto M Schwarz.
Bernhard Gueller, the CPO’s principal guest conductor, will conduct the concert on November 7 with cellist Maja Bogdanović performing the Rococo Variations by Tchaikovsky and Bruckner Symphony No. 4. The Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra under the direction of Liam Burden will open the concert with two movements from Arthur Feder’s Miniature Suite.
Gueller will also direct the Brahms Requiem on Thursday, November 14, with the New Apostolic Church Choir Cape Town. Soloists in Ein deutsches Requiem are Siphamandla Moyake (soprano) and William Berger (baritone).
