Booking opens for the CPO’s Winter season

Three concerts, on June 12, 19 and 26, two conducted by Thomas Sanderling, the third by Jeremy Silver, a concert version of Il Trovatore.

The concert version of Il Trovatore is presented with the support of the City of Cape Town.

Sanderling’s first concert, on June 12, is of works by Brahms, with the stunning violinist Andrey Baranov as the soloist in the Violin Concerto. The main work is the Symphony No. 4.

Baranov is the winner of the Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition of 2012, the Benjamin Britten and Henri Marteau International Violin Competitions, and a prize-winner of more than twenty other international competitions; Sanderling’s celebrated career of more than 50 years has taken him to all the great stages of the world and he has received numerous awards for his artistic achievements. The pre-concert talk on the evening’s works will be presented by John Woodland.

Sanderling’s second concert, on June 19, features two of South Africa’s foremost pianists, Megan-Geoffrey Prins and Tinus Botha, in the Concerto for Two Pianos by Mozart. The concert opens with the overture to Der Entfuehrung aus dem Serail by Mozart and concludes with Beethoven Symphony No 7. Prins has performed extensively as soloist and collaborative artist throughout North America, Europe, Africa, and Hong Kong, while Botha, winner of the UNISA Music Scholarship, performs widely as a soloist and chamber musician locally. Giving the pre-concert talk will be Albert Combrink.

On June 26, Jeremy Silver conducts a concert version of Il Trovatore, Verdi’s masterpiece, with Opera UCT, the CPO Afri-Arts Choir and soloists Nontobeko Bhengu (Leonora, Mkhanyiseli Dyantyi (Manrico), Bongiwe Nakani Mcetywa (Azucena), Theo Magongoma (Conte di Luna) and Monde Masimini (Ferrando). This is the first time this opera has been staged in Cape Town for many years. There will also be a pre-concert talk, with Albert Combrink.
