Black Labone: Pretoria’s creative pulse
Bongani Nicholas Ngomane: Black Labone: Where Pretoria’s creative spirit comes alive.
Every Thursday, the South African State Theatre becomes the heartbeat of Pretoria’s alternative cultural scene as Black Labone transforms the city into a vibrant meeting point for music, poetry, movement and community. What unfolds is not simply an event, but a shared experience that blends artistic freedom with collective energy.
Over the past eight years, Black Labone has grown from a modest open-mic platform into one of the most consistent and influential weekly cultural programmes in Gauteng. It is a space where emerging voices share the stage with established artists, where experimentation is encouraged, and where audiences are not passive spectators but active participants in a living cultural moment.
Now firmly rooted at the South African State Theatre, Black Labone has found a home that supports its scale and spirit. Each Thursday afternoon, creatives and audiences gather to exchange ideas, collaborate across disciplines and celebrate artistic expression in its rawest and most honest form. The atmosphere is electric, driven by live performances, spontaneous collaborations and the unmistakable energy of a community that shows up week after week.
Black Labone runs every Thursday from 4pm until 12 midnight, offering hours of continuous programming that allows audiences to arrive at their own pace and stay as long as they wish. The experience extends beyond a single stage, with indoor and outdoor spaces activated throughout the venue, creating an immersive cultural playground.
A major highlight of the Black Labone calendar is its flagship annual programme, Earth Day, celebrated as the birthday of Black Labone. On this special occasion, the platform expands into a large-scale cultural festival featuring four stages, over 30 bands from South Africa and abroad, and an audience of more than 700 attendees. Earth Day captures the full euphoric spirit of Black Labone, showcasing its growth, reach and international resonance.
Accessibility remains central to the programme’s ethos. Entrance to Black Labone is free, supported by the South African State Theatre’s newly developed, easy-to-use ticketing facility. Audiences can obtain entry tickets anywhere they are using a dynamic QR code scanner, ensuring smooth access and crowd management while maintaining the open, inclusive nature of the platform.
With on-site security, safe parking, and food and drinks available throughout the evening, Black Labone offers a welcoming and secure environment for all. It is a place to discover new talent, reconnect with familiar voices and experience Pretoria’s cultural pulse in real time.
Black Labone is not just a weekly gathering. It is a movement, a legacy in the making, and a powerful reminder of how consistent, community-driven arts programming can shape identity, nurture talent and bring a city together.
Every Thursday. From 16:00 till midnight.
Free entry. Real art. Real people.
