Thami AkaMbongo Manzana: A call to fellow artists to stay grounded.

To my fellow artists,

I write to you not as someone who has all the answers, but as a fellow traveller in this journey we call the entertainment industry.

We are often celebrated, given titles, and held up as examples of success. But many of us know the quiet reality behind the scenes – that our bank accounts and lifestyles don’t always reflect the fame we’re associated with.

First, let me say: don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s the nature of this industry. But more importantly, don’t let the noise around you drown out the voice of reason. There’s so much pressure to live up to an image, to maintain appearances, to chase after the fleeting idea of success that’s been created for us. But that noise? It’s just that – noise.

What you need to listen to is the quiet voice of wisdom. The voice that reminds you of why you chose this path in the first place. The voice that tells you that fame doesn’t define your value, nor does a lack of wealth mean a lack of talent.

This is not Hollywood. This is South Africa – alive with possibilities, yes, but also with its own unique challenges. We need to understand that in this landscape, success doesn’t always follow the typical script. Talent alone won’t always carry you to the top. It takes persistence, resilience, and a deep understanding of the system we are working within. But above all, it takes wisdom.

Don’t judge the source of these words – whether they come from someone younger or older, from someone who’s made it or someone still on their way. Wisdom is not about the messenger; it’s about the message. We must remind ourselves not to get swept up by the fleeting promises of fame and fortune. Instead, stay grounded, stay humble, and listen to that inner voice of reason.

Remember, we are artists. Our worth isn’t defined by wealth, but by the impact we make, the stories we tell, and the lives we touch. Let’s stay true to that.

With solidarity and encouragement,

A Concerned Fellow Artist
