Popular farce Wie hyg so? back on stage

Wie hyg so?

The popular comedy Wie hyg so? will make Pretoria scream with laughter at the South African State Theater during June. The play is written by a former winner of the Nagtegaal prize, Braam van der Vyver.

Timid youth deacon Christoffel van Wyk writes a steaming novel during a boring church council meeting that captures the attention of the renowned publisher, Beulah Bosman. But, male-authored steamy novels do not sell. Beulah, masterfully played by Hannelie Rolfes, concocts a plan of epic proportions to boost the sales of the book. She decides to publish the book, Amelia, under the pseudonym Venus van Wyk and gets a soap opera actress Aurelia Oberholzer-Anderson, to play the part of Venus. Everything seems under control until Aurelia undergoes breast augmentation surgery and the dreaded book reviewer, Rintha Roelofse, starts to scratch where it does not itch. Christoffel leaves with his pastor, Reverend Zuurvogel, to the synod meeting in Hartenbos. It is precisely in Hartenbos where the pastor’s true colours emerge and Christoffel’s problem takes on new dimensions. 36x24x36 to be precise.

The role of the book editor, Beulah Bosman, is played by the experienced actress Hanli Rolfes. She is a regular face on television and film screens. She was recently seen in the suspense series, Spoorloos, on Kyknet. Natania van Heerden, who has won an award for best actress by the ATKV for her portrayal of Mariana in Kruispad, plays Rintha. She also recently featured in the popular series Sara’s Secret. Steffie le Roux shines as Aurelia while Zelda Roelofs, who has had roles in several soap operas, and recently impressed online audiences in Deurnis Digitaal, plays the role of Amelia.

The celebrated actor, Gerben Kamper, plays the role of Reverend Zuurvogel. Kamper, whose career spans 49 years, was on screen in Binnelanders this year. In the recent past, he has played roles in Die Byl and Swartwater on TV as well as in the film Klein Karoo 2. His long list of awards includes a medal of honor for his lifelong and outstanding artistic contribution to the Afrikaans Theater of the South African Academy for Science and the Arts. The role of the youth deacon is handled by the rising young star, Ruan Wessels. Wessels, who recently won a Naledi award as the best young emerging actor, is also on stages nationwide this year in the popular one-person play, Plesierengel. Ruan has starred in several soap operas.

The production is directed by Johan van der Merwe and Èmil Haarhoff. Both are part of the multi-award winning Deurnis project that boasts a Fiësta, an ATKV Veertjie and Kyknet’s Blou Stoel awards for innovative theatre. Van der Merwe was also awarded for his work as a producer. He was one of the commissioning producers responsible for producing Die Reuk van Appels, Kamphoer and the Deurnis project. These productions have won several awards. Haarhoff is an actor, director, choreographer and IDC qualified intimacy coordinator who has entertained audiences for more than a decade. Èmil was amongst others seen in the films Vaselingetjie and Clan of the Cave Bear, as well as in theater productions including Peter Pan, Snow White, West Side Story, Bar(r)ok and Koekeloer.

He is one of the founding members of Intimacy Practitioners South Africa, who have been instrumental in creating the Protocols for Intimate Content in TV, Film and Associated Media in South Africa. His intimacy coordination credits include Netflix shows such as Savage Beauty and Night Shift, feature films such as Daryn’s Gym and Blurred Lines, as well as telenovelas such as The Estate and Lingashoni.
