Dada Masilo at The Dance Factory

Dada Masilo will present her latest work THE SACRIFICE at The Dance Factory in Newtown, Johannesburg on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May at 14:00.

Of THE SACRIFICE she says: “I have always been fascinated by the study of unfamiliar dance forms and fusing these vocabularies with contemporary dance or classical ballet to create a new language. The dancers and I have been learning the dance of Botswana. I find it very beautiful, elegant rhythmic and expressive; I have fused this with contemporary dance.

I work with 9 great dancers and with 4 talented musicians who have created an original score.”

Dancers: Dada Masilo, Sinazo Bokolo, Refiloe Mogoje, Thandiwe Mqokeli, Lwando Dutyulwa, Thuso Lobeko, Songezo Mcilizeli, Steven Mokone, Lebo Seodigeng, Tshepo Zasekhaya.

Composer/Musicians: Ann Masina, Leroy Mapholo, Tlale Makhene, Nathi Shongwe Running time: 60 minutes (no interval).

The company Dada Masilo/The Dance Factory has been touring internationally since 2012.

So far, it has presented Dada Masilo’s works in 27 countries and in 155 cities. The repertoire has included Masilo’s SWAN LAKE, CARMEN, GISELLE and THE SACRIFICE.

Dada Masilo was the 2008 recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance.

This South African award was instrumental in launching her international career. Since then, she has also received in 2016, a nomination for a Bessie Award (New York- for Swan Lake), 2017; Danza & Danza Award (Italy) for ‘Best Performance 2017’ – Giselle, in 2018, Prince Claus ‘Next Generation’ Award (The Netherlands); and in 2020, the UK Critic’s Circle 2020 National Dance Award for Outstanding Female Modern Performance in the title role as Giselle.
