Music of The Night kickstarts 2022 with a bang
Kickstart 2022 with a bang with Music Of The Night – one composer, many lyricists – opening on 28 January at The Dome, on the grounds of the NSA.
Outdoor fun and music doesn’t need to end in the summer holidays!
Kickstart 2022 with a bang with LIVE theatre in the outdoors!
The striking new outdoor amphitheatre, The Dome, situated on the grounds of The National School of Arts (NSA), launches the venue’s 2022 entertainment calendar in grand style on Friday, 28 January 2022, with the opening of Music of the Night – one composer, many lyricists.
One thing is certain; outdoor entertainment rules this summer, and the venue just 400m up from Empire Road and behind the Joburg Theatre – also not to be confused with the now defunct Ticketpro Dome in North Riding – has the perfect socially distanced and safe outdoor space, ensuring the wellbeing of its patrons who attend shows and the artists who perform there.
Music of The Night is a hit-filled musical revue that presents a special take on the very many lyricists who have adorned the musical notes of the iconic musical theatre composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber.
This is not a tribute show but rather a musical anthology of fifty- five years of words and music from the legendary lyricists, including Sir Tim Rice, Don Black, Sir Richard Stilgoe, Charles Hart, Glenn Slater and others who have penned a veritable treasure-chest of hits we have grown to love over the years.
Audiences will be taken on a dazzling journey of pure nostalgia with over 30 hits ranging from Any Dream Will Do and Memory to Don’t Cry For Me Argentina and As If We Never Said Goodbye, all sparkling with fresh new arrangements and showcasing the diverse mix and styles of the lyric wordsmiths who created these hits.
This one composer, The Lord Lloyd-Webber, together with his many lyricists, has created the soundtrack of the musical theatre genre of more than a half a century, all spectacularly celebrated in Music of The Night.
Instantly recognisable numbers will captivate the audience with songs from hit shows including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard and other rarely unearthed surprises to keep everyone thoroughly entertained.
All packaged into a 90-minute gift box of musical treats.
The stellar cast setting the stage alight will be stage and screen star Craig Urbani (Rock of Ages, The Rocky Horror Show, Legacy), Stephanie Baartman (Getroud Met Rugby, Supersterre), Carly Graeme (Starlight Express, The Boys in the Photograph) and introducing the internet sensation, father-and-daughter duo Adrian & Emma-Jean Galliard.
Musical Staging is by Joubert Jonker, with Musical Direction by Clifford Cooper and lighting by Jane Gosnell.
The Dome offers an ideal summer outing in the heart of Joburg, safe secure parking on the grounds of the NSA, a raked amphitheatre in a tree flanked setting with excellent Sound and Lighting.
The atmosphere is summery and casual – audiences are encouraged to bring their picnic baskets, including their own bottles (just no glass please) and cushions to ensure their maximum protection from Covid-19.
As the venue is free seating and restricted to a maximum of 500 audience members, with a strict “mask on at all times” policy to be adhered to (except when eating and drinking); audiences can choose their own degree of social distancing.
All Covid-19 protocols will be strictly observed, making a trip to The Dome a stress-free experience.
There will be food and non-alcoholic beverages available on sale before the show.
