NCT presents “Sparky” The Sloth
Libby is lonely and she needs a friend. “I want a pet!” begs Libby.
After some persistence her mother responds, “You can have any pet you want as long – as it doesn’t need to be walked, or bathed, or fed.”
Wow! That is a serious request! Where does one find such a pet?
Libby’s friend gives her good advice “Ask the school librarian.” And indeed it is good advice. The librarian sets Libby on the path of finding information about animals. After little research Libby is overjoyed to discover a pet that meets all the criteria – one that doesn’t need to be walked or bathed or fed!
Libby immediately completes a mail order form and when her sloth arrives – she calls him Sparky. It’s love at first sight… even if Sparky doesn’t know how to fetch and always loses at Hide-and-Seek.
Libby’s friend is unimpressed with Sparky’s lack of activity, so Libby decides to teach him some tricks so she can show him off. Sparky isn’t as easy to train as she had hoped, but she perseveres and plans to show off his skills and arranges an “Extravaganza”. And that’s where the trouble begins.
This is a sweet children’s story with a lesson – the bond between owner and pet is more valuable than any impressive trick. Even more important is the moral of the story: to accept a friend or a pet for what they are and to love them as they are with their faults and their good points.
This is another great story for the 3-8 year olds (following The Tiger Who Came to Tea)! And an opportunity for children to see theatre at its best presented by multi-award-winning National Children’s Theatre.
