Come celebrate Father’s Day in Springs with West

WEST - Hugo Hewitt, Ernie Bates and Mac Young.

American country legend Charley Pride once remarked, “It’s not reasonable to expect everyone in the world to be a country music fan.” And then with a smile added: “Not yet, anyway.”

Fans of country music and music lovers in general can take note of West, the new hit group consisting of Ernie Bates (of Overtone fame), Mac Young and Hugo Hewitt. The trio breathes new life into country music with their harmonious rendition of country hits that will not only please seasoned fans, but also create a new generation of fans. It’s fitting, then, that Charley Pride’s ‘I’m So Afraid of Losing You Again’ is one of the hits on West’s first CD to be released soon. Come celebrate Father’s Day with West at Fabu-leux in Springs on Sunday, 20 June. Dads can look forward to a delicious spit braai and three-course meal from 12:00, followed by West. Ernie Bates is of course no stranger. He is an internationally acclaimed music producer, arranger, musician, singer and TV star, and has been in the music industry for the past two decades and has achieved great success worldwide. Ernie was part of the South African acapella group Overtone, which became a household name in 2009 after appearing in the Warner Brothers film Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon and directed by Clint Eastwood. Ernie has adapted and produced five songs for the film and has collaborated with world-renowned film music producers Michael Stevens and Kyle Eastwood. Overtone sang the entire soundtrack for the film. The group was also with the Eastwood family in the E! Entertainment reality show Mrs. Eastwood and Company in 2012.

Back in South Africa, it still is Ernie’s passion to write, compose, arrange, produce and master the art of music. And that’s where West started. “Last year, just before the lockdown was announced, I decided to release more videos of my music. I am privileged enough to have my own studio and produce music for other artists,” says Ernie. “Apart from making my own music videos, I was also busy with Mac Young’s album at the time. In my opinion, he is certainly one of the best country singers in South Africa!”

Mac Young’s debut album Pretty Soon was released in August 2014, and the music industry immediately took note of his talent. How could they not? He started singing at the age of three and is a master of the guitar. “I was born to be on stage,” says Mac. “I want to inspire people with music. My passion is country music and although I always try to see the light side of life, I prefer music with a deeper meaning that touches people’s hearts.” Ernie approached Mac to sing with him on the music video of the Waylon Jennings hit, A couple more years. However, Ernie felt that a third voice was needed, and approached Hugo Hewitt. The two were members of the same gospel band.

As is the case with most musicians, Hugo comes from a very musical family. “My father and his brother started making music together at school, and I grew up under their sound desk at performances,” says Hugo. “As a family, we often sang together at family gatherings. I was four years old when my grandmother taught me how to harmonise, and in grade seven I started teaching myself to play guitar”. At school Hugo was part of the choir and music groups, and studied sound engineering after school. Hugo then joined Lefra Productions as a sound engineer where his love for theatre started.

Ernie describes Hugo as a “master of harmonisation”. Hugo agreed to be the third voice on the music video, and what would initially be a once-off collaboration was the beginning of a new chapter in the three men’s lives. “I remember the day in the studio when Hugo’s voice was added. It was a goose bumps moment and it doesn’t happen to me much,” says Ernie. The video resonated with the public and the men decided to give the group a try. “All three of us are artists in our own right,” says Hugo. “However, our love for country brought us together. Ernie is a fan of more classic country, where Mac again is a master of modern country. I myself prefer the country of the 80’s and 90’s. It was clear from that first moment that we would be a country group.”

The name West pays homage to the American country and western movement. According to Ernie, no one makes country music quite like the Americans. “With this country revival taking place in South Africa over the past three years, West was born after great demand from the public,” says Mac. “We decided to give West a go and fill a gap that is clearly in the market. Our goal is of course to release new, quality country music in South Africa for as long as possible”. With their debut album, however, West decided to include more well-known songs, thereby introducing more classic county hits to a new generation. But, as Mac says, all three West members are seasoned writers and the album includes one of Hugo’s original songs, I am yours.

It isn’t reasonable to expect that everyone in the world is a country music fan.”

Entertainment realiteitsprogram Mrs. Eastwood and Company in 2012 te sien.

“As familie, het ons gereeld saamgesing by familiebyeenkomste.

Ernie beskryf Hugo as ‘n “harmoniseringsmeester”.
