Zaan Sonnekus releases new single

Zaan Sonnekus - Ek kan net bid

New rock sensation, Zaan Sonnekus, is going to take the South African music industry by storm!

He peeks out from behind his dark sunglasses; and with a quiet half-shy look in his eyes, he pulls you in. There is something magical about this Free State-born musician, former Affies pupil and COPA student, who now calls Pretoria home. ‘Something’ draws you to this twenty-two-year-old young man in the black leather jacket and tight jeans. Maybe it is the tattoos – which most likely have interesting stories behind them… His eyes are always carefully smiling and makes you wonder what he is thinking…

Dark, shoulder length hair reveals his artistic side and you instinctively you know that his genre is rock. But this is a different kind of rocker. He is fit, healthy, ‘clean’… He speaks calmly and softly, and you cannot help to wonder if this is the one that we have all been waiting for? A new rock sensation with lyrics that make sense. A gifted musician who is not afraid to share his own style and truth with fans, who wants to mesmerise us with his heartfelt lyrics and soulful voice and wants to make us rock…

We are visiting the set of the music video for his new single, EK KAN NET BID, filmed by CoolerBox Brothers at Monte de Dios in a giant dome with massive screens. Fifteen people are running around with director, George van Rooyen shouting instructions over the megaphone. The evening air is electric, and excitement is palpable. The stage is dark, and the piano and band are ready for action. Next to the piano is a bouquet of yellow sunflowers. He suddenly appears from nowhere and slides in behind the piano. With soft notes echoing through the building, he starts singing:

(“At four am when the bed still squeaks, after the day’s battles, he still struggles to sleep, he falls through the cracks… he falls until he’s gone…”)

ZAAN SONNEKUS pulls you in gently and then gets up from behind the piano and undergo a massive transformation right in front of your eyes! An atomic bomb explodes on the big screen, he kicks in the air, grabs and throws the microphone, jumps and waves his hair and at that moment he completely owns the stage and the audience! Before you can get over it, you start singing… no shouting out loud: “Ek kan net bid vir nou! Ek kan net bid vir jou! (I can only pray for now! I can only pray for you!)”. These wise words never leave your head…

The words of his latest single from his own pen, cut straight through your soul and it is like you are experiencing every emotion with him. “It is about prayer in desperate times. If we can all just pray together and live together, we can change the world,” he says about this song.

There is little you can tell ZAAN SONNEKUS about desperate times. He stretches his hand out when he sings:

Tot my dae uitloop as jy jou siel verkoop.
Ek kan net bid vir nou.
Ek kan net bid vir jou.”

(“I can only pray for you,
until my days end, and I still have so many questions.
I will fight for you,
and for all you stood for.
Until the sands of my hourglass run empty, and you sell your soul.
I can only pray for now.
I can only pray for you.”)

You cannot help getting chills when he sings. You cannot help to get tears in your eyes – it just comes naturally. His father, brother and sister are also there and so is his mother – in spirit. Beforehand he had already explained that this song is very personal to him and is about how he and his mother used to pray for one another in times of crisis when they were afraid of losing each other.

“Most of my songs start out as poems. I have my own little song writing book and I write all my own songs. This one is like a clay pot… Most likely as fragile as I was when I wrote it, but also a prayer that gave me courage and strength to keep fighting during chaotic times. It was created close to my twenty-first birthday – just before or after my mother went to rehab. She was an amazing and kind person, who taught me everything about love and peace and was one of the best artists to ever pick up a brush. But sometimes trauma kills you on the inside and makes you forget who you really are. She is the inspiration behind the song. When I was young, I used to wake up with her sitting on my bed and praying for me and I think that is what kept me safe over the years.”

He admits that writing songs is his way of dealing with anger and pain. “2016 to 2020 was a very difficult time in my life and when my mother died of Covid-19, I was devastated. Not losing my head in dark times, staying strong and being honest are some of the biggest challenges I have had to overcome over the past few years. Although I am still struggling sometimes, I believe that my mother’s prayers are keeping me on track,” he shares.

“I would not be surprised if my music shocked listeners, because it has a completely different sound that might seem dramatic or aggressive. If listeners look deeper, they will find meaning in the song and hopefully it will touch the hearts of everyone who hears it. It provides a small glimpse of who I am but could mean something entirely different to someone else,” he says and puts the sunflowers down on the piano and adds: “This is for her. I honour the person who inspired this song,” turns around and walks away.

And that is all we get – a mere glimpse of ZAAN SONNEKUS – and we are already hooked and want more!

Hy is fiks, gesond, ‘skoon’…

Tot my dae uitloop as jy jou siel verkoop.
