NCT’s Annual Shakespeare Festival

“Shakespeare is alive and flourishing among the children of Gauteng” says Moira Katz, CEO of National Children’s Theatre.

Under the superb guidance of Dr Rohan Quince the NCT Shakespeare Club will celebrate William Shakespeare’s birthday on 11, 12 and 13 May 2021 in our new outdoor INSPIRATION THEATRE.

While the exact day of the Bard’s birth is contested, it is generally observed on April 23, which is also the day he died 52 years later. (We know it’s a little late to celebrate, but this date fits best with our NCT calendar).

The philosophy behind the celebration is born of the belief that Shakespeare is a vibrant, passionate, human, teachable, enjoyable playwright, accessible to all learners! We believe that you’re never too young to start learning about Shakespeare, and the best way to learn is to see and hear and do. Having a great first encounter with Shakespeare should be something every learner experiences.

So, join our young thespians as they, with an in-depth understanding of the text, select scenes and monologues and enthusiastically portray their interpretations of classical characters with great energy and passion. This is not about competition, its rather about enjoying Shakespeare in a fun and engaging way.

Know students who would like to enter the Festival? It’s not too late. Contact Dr Quince at

The Club meets every Saturday afternoon during term time from 14:30 – 16:30. Want to join? Contact Dr Quince at or phone Cindy at NCT 011 484 1584.
